  3. PCalc 2.0 is a new version of my veteran calculator application from 1992. It's a fully featured scientific calculator with support for hexadecimal and binary calculations, that works on Mac OS 8 and later, including Mac OS X.

  15. By default, it uses a new Platinum appearance when running on Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9, an Aqua appearance when running on OS X, and the original look is also available.

PCalc was the first piece of Macintosh software I ever wrote - I started it in the summer of 1992 to learn how to program the Mac while I was at university. After the initial release in 1992 there were two minor updates in 1993. In the subsequent years it was not updated for a number of reasons, including exams, having a full time job, and working on my popular dock application DragThing in my spare time.

  32. Despite that, I still got regular email from people asking about it and telling me it was still the best calculator application out there, even eight years later.

Recently, my work situation changed, and now my software is my full time job. I moved back to my native Scotland, and set up a company called TLA Systems Ltd. to write great Mac software. So I decided that it was about time that PCalc had an update. I promise the next release will take less than eight years :-)

This release of PCalc is shareware, that means you can download it and try it out for free, but if you like it and continue to use it you should pay the US $10 registration fee. TLA Systems employs me and my wife Saskia, and registrations are our livelihood, so registering your copies of PCalc and DragThing really does make a difference!

  55. There are two versions of PCalc included, PCalc Classic and PCalc Carbon.
  56.  
  57. PCalc Classic runs on any 68K or PowerPC Macintosh with any version of Mac OS 8 or Mac OS 9. A PowerPC based Mac with Mac OS 8.6 or later is recommended.

  59. PCalc Carbon is designed for any PowerPC Macintosh with Mac OS 8.1 or later, including Mac OS X. It requires that CarbonLib 1.0.4 or later is installed when running on systems prior to Mac OS X.

  61. There are no functional differences between the two, however the Carbon version includes extra support for Mac OS X.

  63. If you are using a recent Mac, say an iMac, an iBook or a G3/G4, and have CarbonLib 1.0.4 or later installed, I'd recommend using the Carbon version.
